Im a bad Mum & I’m totally cool with that

As mothers we are constantly judged.

Judged by our friends & family, colleagues, other Mums at school or daycare ,midwives, social media and the most harshest of all critics… OURSELVES!

As if we didn’t have enough to deal with already we are constantly having to justify or second guess the decisions we make as Mothers.

No wonder so many of us live on the brink of mental breakdown!

Breastfeeding has to be one of the most talked about and judged aspects of motherhood. I know, because I live and breath this industry as part of my business every-single-day AND I’m a new Mum myself!

It seems anyone and everyone believes they have a right to verbalise their opinion on someone else’s breastfeeding journey – No matter what impact their faceless comments may have.

I call it Mum trolling and frankly it’s got to stop! But that’s a whole other post for another time.

My son is now 16 months old. However, when he turned 5 months old, I made the hard decision to stop breastfeeding!

After months of trying every possible food elimination diet, visits to GP’s, Paediatricians, constant feelings of guilt and anxiety as i desperately tried to figure out what was causing our poor bubs rashes, eczema and tummy troubles, my supply inevitably took a hit!

Not to mention my confidence as a new Mum.

One upside of owning a maternity tea business is unlimited access to your products.

So, naturally I ramped up my intake of PROSPERITEA (MaterniTea lactation tea blend) and thankfully after a couple of days of guzzling tea, my supply was flowing freely again and I was able to pump enough to keep up with his feeds, BUT that didn’t change the fact my poor bub was still suffering from some sort of allergy.

It was at this point we were advised by our Doctor to try an allergy specific rice protein baby formula.

But here comes the really shitty part…

Instead of my first reaction being “ok great here is something different we can try that might help him” my initial reaction was…

If I stop breastfeeding and switch to formula, people will think I’m a bad Mum!

I’ll think I’m a bad Mum!

I can’t deprive him of this liquid gold (despite the fact there was clearly something coming through mine that was making him sick).

I work in an industry that should be so supportive and uplifting yet at times I see how brutal and judgemental it can be. What will people think?

But we decided to give it a try nonetheless while still expressing just in case it didnt work.

The effects were almost instantaneous!

In just two days his painful skin rashes cleared up, he was happier and sleeping better and my beautiful baby boy didn’t seem to be in pain anymore! It was a no brainer!

I knew then that my baby was better off on his allergy formula from now on and if that meant I was a bad Mum, then you know what – IM TOTALLY COOL WITH THAT!

MaterniTea is all about supporting women through every stage of fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I want you to remember that everybody’s journey is different.

YOU have to do what’s right for YOU and YOUR baby! Thats it!
