“Love ya guts, Mama” – A pregnancy snack to relieve digestive issues

“Love ya guts, Mama” – A pregnancy snack to relieve digestive issues

With my first pregnancy 9 years ago I put on a whopping 30+ kilos-  YIKES!!!

I suffered with all sorts of digestive issues, from embarrassing excessive wind, bloating, constipation and stomach pains.

So second time around, a little older, a little wiser and a lot more determined not to put myself in that position again.

Plus, I wanted to make sure the foods I was eating were nourishing and supporting my baby’s growth and development.

So, following the advice from our MaterniTea Dietician in my pregnancy consultation, here’s my take on the perfect afternoon snack to combat digestive discomfort during pregnancy.

Love ya guts Mama with PuriTea

1- PLAIN GREEK YOGURT

One of the most touted benefits of Greek yogurt is the probiotics it contains. These healthy bacteria help promote a healthy functioning gut. It helps keep you regular and combat the common digestive issues associated with pregnancy.

Using a good quality plain Greek yogurt like Chobani helps you add the all important calcium to your diet.

Calcium helps your baby to grow a healthy heart, nerves, muscles bones and teeth. Its also the mineral that will get sucked up by your baby first leaving you deficient if you don’t top up your supply regularly.

2- BLUEBERRIES

Filled with vitamin C, which helps you absorb other import minerals like iron and calcium from the foods you eat, vitamin C helps boost your immune system. Along with Beta Carotene, Potassium and Folic Acid which all help build your baby’s healthy skin cells and immune system.

3- CHIA SEEDS

Chia means strength. They are a natural super-food which provide an incredible energy boost. Supporting your digestive system, chia is a rich source of fibre which helps promote regular bowel movements relieving common pregnancy issues like constipation and bloating.

Chia is also great for helping balance blood sugar levels and helping you feel fuller quicker, meaning you wont overeat.

4- SHREDDED ORGANIC COCONUT

Coconut not only tastes delicious but its rich in Manganese, which helps your developing bub to form bone and cartilage.

5- A DRIZZLE OF HONEY

This is a personal preference. I like a touch of sweetness, not too much just a nice touch for an indulgent feel.

6- A CUP OF PURITEA

Digestive discomfort is really common in pregnancy. All thanks to the hormone progesterone slowing everything down and making your system sluggish.

PuriTea is an organic herbal tea blend designed by our MaterniTea team of Naturopaths, Dieticians and myself – A Certified Australian Tea Master.

We wanted to create a refreshing blend to enjoy after meals that helps keep your system moving and relieve constipation, bloating, heartburn and general digestive discomforts.

PuriTea is 100% organic and caffeine free and is perfect for keeping your system flowing. It can be served hot or chilled, ideally after a meal.
